Its amazing to see what happens when the biggies get together, mean business and really get their act together – Google, HTC, Sony, Dell, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel, Nvidia, and Wind River Systems!  Woww… The Open Headset Alliance (OHA) is to be really applauded for developing Android, its flagship software product!

I was really apprehensive when I set out to buy an Android mobile in last November, warnings came from everywhere!  Android devices are “energy guzzlers”, “Clunky”,… After thinking long and hard, I settled down on a device which had a Li-Po 1700 mAh battery, 1 GHz processor with 512 MB RAM / GB ROM.   I was hoping that such a configuration would negate all the flip sides of Android and thankfully, I have had a wonderful experience except for the initial hiccups mainly because due to my intelligent (duh!) approach.

What has really excited me?  Here is a quick list:

  • Play Store:  The sheer variety of Apps available for Android devices will any-day set it apart.. Few apps that I regularly use include Email (Corporate, Gmail), Chat (Lync, Gtalk), Viber, GoToMeeting, Google Sky, LinkedIn, Facebook, Reader and of course games
  • Hardware support:  5 meg camera has never let me down… in-built GPS, proximity sensor, gyroscopes,… it is real fun actually.. you will feel the difference when you start using Maps and other utility tools
  • Tethering:  You know the moment when you have to send out an important document and your wi-fi is down because of a power-cut!  Hot spots have saved me half a dozen times.. (In case you are not able to relate to this, you should spend a week in Chennai over Summer)
  • Connectivity:  GSM, GPRS/3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth.. It’s a walk in the park once you know how to get the settings right.
  • Multi touch:  cool feature especially when you use them in Games, Maps,…
  • Security:  Sandbox really trims access to personal data for all the Apps installed
Have been itching to root it and install ICS but holding myself back because they warranty will get void!

Device owned:  Motorola Defy+, Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread)
